Saba Karim and Reetinder Sodhi have spoken about the importance of the upcoming T20 World Cup in Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s captaincy career. Following Kohli’s latest loss in an ICC event, questions were being raised on whether he’s the suitable candidate to lead India in all formats.

There have been debates raging on the possible introduction of split captaincy to relieve some pressure off of Kohli’s shoulders. Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is the ideal candidate. Although it would make more sense to get a younger captain with an eye on the future.

Keeping that in mind, Saba Karim explained the importance of the T20 World Cup for Kohli as a skipper. Speaking to India News, Karim said:

“The T20 World Cup will be very crucial for Virat Kohli’s captaincy career. I feel the pressure is increasing on him. He himself knows that he has not won an ICC trophy as a skipper. He will put in utmost effort to ensure that India wins this World Cup.”

“I have the expectation that India will win this trophy on 14th November. Then I feel Virat Kohli will get breathing space. Later he can assess for how long he wants to captain after that, he can evaluate if there is too much pressure on him,” Karim reckoned.

Another former cricketer Reetinder Sodhi shared the same notion. He stated that Kohli will have to improve in the ICC events. But eventually, the decision to step down should be made by Kohli himself, according to Sodhi.

“If you talk about pressure, it is definitely there because you have not won an ICC tournament. You have been the captain for such a long time but in crunch moments our team has come under pressure and lost. So Virat Kohli will definitely want to improve there,” Sodhi noted.

“But I want to support Virat Kohli because over the years he has captained for so many matches and never done anything wrong. If we win the T20 World Cup, Virat should definitely remain the captain. If we don’t win, God forbid, then I feel it should be left to Virat.”
