Board of Control for Cricket in India’s President, Sourav Ganguly, recently confirmed that the 2021 T20 World Cup will be shifted To the UAE. The matches will take place in the UAE. However, the BCCI will still be organizing the mega-event, according to the ICC.
Owing to the rise of covid-19 cases in India, the apex board felt it wasn’t feasible to conduct the World cup in the subcontinent. The change in venue however will aid in smoothening the process. This also enables the BCCI to organize the second phase of the IPL 2021 and move on to the World Cup in a seamless transition.
Earlier, it was reported that the IPL 2021 might resume from September 18. Also revealed was the possibility of the cash-rich league being wrapped up just a few days before the multi-nation event. Following the latest decision, that schedule might be refined. According to a report in the Times of India, the IPL is likely to be finished by October 10.
T20 World cup qualifiers from October 17
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had told the Times of India that the ICC will kickstart the tournament on October 17 with the qualifiers. Hence, the main event of the T20 World Cup will be held at least 2 weeks after the IPL, giving the players enough rest between the tournaments. This is in compliance with the Lodha reforms which require BCCI to give 2 weeks of break time between schedules.
“The dates haven’t been finalized. Even if the tournament starts on the heels of the IPL, it will not be much of a problem. Because the first 12 matches of the tournament will be played between the eight teams as qualifiers. Those matches will be played in Oman,” Ganguly told on Monday.
IPL 2021 and T20 World Cup’s tentative timeline:
- Phase 2 of IPL 2021 begins on September 18
- IPL 2021 concludes on October 10
- T20 World Cup Qualifiers (8 teams) begin in Oman on       October 17
- The main Event of the T20 World Cup starts on October      24/25
- T20 World Cup concludes on November 14
This will help the IPL franchises to acquire the services of the foreign players since they’re set to play the T20 World Cup in the UAE anyway. However, what the respective boards decide, is yet to be seen.
