Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra is uncertain about Rohit Sharma’s future as a captain in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle. He expressed that results haven’t gone in India’s favour in the last two finals and given Rohit Sharma’s age, he is uncertain whether the right-handed batter will continue at the helm for the complete cycle.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy was scrutinised following the loss against Australia in the World Test Championship final at The Kennington Oval in London. There have been calls for a change in captaincy following the defeat. However, the selectors are likely to continue with Rohit Sharma as the captain for the upcoming West Indies tour. As per reports, a call on his future will be taken after the ICC ODI World Cup this year.

Aakash Chopra spoke about Rohit Sharma’s future as a captain in Test cricket in a video shared on his Youtube channel. He said,

“Rohit is a good captain, there is no doubt about that. Rohit is a good Test batter, there is no doubt about that as well. But will the future remain like this only – I am not 100% certain because you have reached the final in the last two cycles but haven’t won even once, and age is not on his side, this is the reality.”

“When you see the next two years, and another WTC cycle – 2025, Rohit Sharma could still be playing Test cricket if he really wants to play Test cricket. Six series is a lot of time,” he added.

We have seen people missing a lot of cricket in the last two years: Aakash Chopra

Former cricketer Aakash Chopra is unsure whether Rohit Sharma can play all three formats consistently for Team India. The skipper last played a T20I in 2022 against England during the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup. Since then, Hardik Pandya has led Team India in the format.

“We have seen people missing a lot of cricket in the last two years. The position at which Indian cricket is standing, I don’t think you will be allowed to take a lot of breaks. In such a scenario, you want to play three formats but will you be able to do that?” said Aakash Chopra.

Aakash Chopra expressed that the Indian selectors need to start thinking about the next World Test Championship final. He added that they need to build a squad for the future after the South Africa series later this year. He said,

“Can the selectors, by the end of 2023, when you come back from South Africa, start thinking about the next WTC final? One year will remain. There will be five Test matches against England. Then you have to go to Australia, so should they look for a change? This is going to be an interesting one.”
