Team India will aim to end their prolonged ICC major trophy drought as they commence their campaign in the upcoming ODI World Cup on October 5. Notably, the team’s last major ICC tournament victory dates back to 2013.

Despite commendable performances in such events, clinching a trophy has remained elusive. India’s recurring struggle in knockout stages has been a contributing factor. Former Pakistan batsman Salman Butt has advised India to prioritize experienced players over younger ones for this year’s mega event.

Butt proposed the idea of making Shikhar Dhawan a permanent opener, while either Rohit Sharma or Shubman Gill could partner with him in the opening slot.

“They will need Shikhar Dhawan on top. I don’t see any of the top-order batters, among right-handers, who can open as good as him. Either Shikhar and Shubman (Gill) can open and Rohit (Sharma) comes one down, or Rohit can open with Shikhar,” said Butt on his YouTube channel.

“They will need experience in World Cup. They also need a guy in at number 6, either it’s KL Rahul or (Ajinkya) Rahane. When there’s pressure, the youngsters stutter. You need experience,” said Butt, who was impressed with Rahane’s IPL form and Test comeback.

Dhawan’s comeback to the Indian team appears unlikely as he has been out of favour for an extended period. In contrast, captain Rohit and opener Gill remain consistent members of the team. India tested the Gill and Ishan Kishan opening combination in the ODI series against West Indies, with Kishan standing out, scoring three back-to-back fifties.

However, Rahane was included in India’s Test series against West Indies, but he did not make it to the white-ball squads. It will be interesting to see who will be selected for the marquee event.
