Former India head coach Gary Kirsten is one of the illustrious chapters in Indian cricket. Since taking over the charge from Lalchand Rajput back in 2007, Kirsten took the sport in the country to greater heights.
India were going through a tumultuous time when the former South Africa cricketer took over the charge. The Men in Blues crashed out from the group stages in the 50-overs World Cup which took the job of then-head coach Greg Chappell. Within months, they made a superb turnaround under MS Dhoni winning the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Gary Kirsten joined the side during that time and changed the Indian cricket for good. Under him, India ended their 28 years of barren run winning the ICC World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium beating Sri Lanka. Nine years after that victory, Gary was asked if he would wish to make a comeback.
I would always consider it: Gary Kirsten on India’s head coach role
The renowned coach, who had worked in the Indian Premier League after that, didn’t rule out his chances of making a comeback. However, Gary Kirsten admitted that for that to happen everyone has to come on the same page.
“I would always consider it. Although it would need to work out for everyone,” Times of India (TOI) quoted Kirsten as saying.
Following his tenure as India boss, Gary Kirsten worked with the South African team. He was on the verge of becoming the head coach of India’s women side but the Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee had to overlook his application due to his contract with the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Meanwhile, the current India head coach Ravi Shastri has his contract until the 2021 T20 World Cup slated to take place in India. It will be interesting to see how things pan out in the future and whether Gary Kirsten gets on the hot seat again.
