Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has suggested two all-rounders Chennai Super Kings can target in the upcoming IPL 2021 auction. Incidentally, the Super Kings will look to overhaul their squad after a poor stint in IPL 2020 in the UAE.

Having finished seventh last season, Chennai Super Kings will be looking to bounce back this season and make it to the playoffs once again after missing out for the first time last year. The MS Dhoni-led side has released six players including the likes of Kedar Jadhav and Harbhajan Singh. On the other hand, they have traded in senior batsman Robin Uthappa from Rajasthan Royals.

Speaking about Chennai’s strategy in the upcoming auction, Gautam Gambhir believes, the return of Suresh Raina and the addition of Uthappa will strengthen what looked like a wobbly batting in the last IPL.

“Not many (gaps to fill). Despite having not the best season last time around, I think, they still have a strong core. Suresh Raina has come back now, Robin Uthappa – they have traded from Rajasthan Royals, obviously, their batting looks very strong at the moment which was a bit of a mess in the last season,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

“So, with the experience of Raina, Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni, they have got a strong Indian batting line-up,” he added.

Chennai Super Kings can go for Morris, Gowtham – Gautam Gambhir

However, Gautam Gambhir feels Chennai Super Kings can add two more all-rounders in the IPL 2021 auction to their ranks to step up their game in the upcoming season. CSK already have the likes of Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, and Mitchell Santner but Gambhir believes the addition of Chris Morris and Krishnappa Gowtham can increase depth in their line-up.

“Their core is still intact. They have got Ravindra Jadeja, they’ve got Dwayne Bravo who has been there for such a long time. So probably, they will look at someone like K Gowtham as an off-spinner because they have let go of Harbhajan Singh. And a back-up of Bravo, because MS believes a lot in all-rounders with the kind of surface they play on,” said Gautam Gambhir.

“Whether Bravo can play all the games and he’s not getting any younger. And at the same time, an Indian seamer, so it could be Umesh Yadav as well. So, once they have Umesh and Deepak Chahar and then they’ve got a backup, for someone like Dwayne Bravo could be Chris Morris and K Gowtham,” he added.
