Gautam Gambhir was seen having a conversation with Sanju Samson following the opener’s brisk cameo in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 encounter against Zimbabwe. India secured a comprehensive 72-run victory on Thursday, February 26.
Samson came into the playing XI in place of Rinku Singh and opened the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma. The right-handed batter produced a lively 24 off just 15 deliveries, striking one four and two sixes at a strike rate of 160.
Although he did not convert his start into a substantial score, his aggressive approach provided India with early momentum in the powerplay and laid the foundation for a formidable total. After his dismissal, as he made his way back to the dugout, Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak welcomed him with fist bumps.
The head coach was later spotted engaging in a short discussion with Sanju Samson inside the dugout. You can watch the video here:

India amassed an imposing 256/4 after opting to bat first. It marked their highest-ever total in T20 World Cup history and the second-highest overall in the tournament, trailing only Sri Lanka national cricket team’s 260/6 against Kenya national cricket team in the 2007 edition.
Sanju Samson Features In Just Two Matches At T20 World Cup 2026
Sanju Samson has featured in just two games at the T20 World Cup 2026. He lost his spot as the first-choice wicketkeeper after enduring a disappointing home series against New Zealand national cricket team, managing only 46 runs across five matches.
During the ongoing tournament, he was drafted into the XI against Namibia national cricket team as a replacement for Abhishek, who was sidelined due to illness. Samson showed intent in that outing but once again couldn’t turn his start into a substantial score, smashing 22 off just eight deliveries, including a four and three sixes, at an impressive strike rate of 275.
Struggling to convert promising starts into big knocks has been a recurring theme in his career, affecting his chances of securing a regular place in the playing XI. Despite making his T20I debut back in 2015, he has played only 59 matches in the format for India over more than a decade.
