Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir made it clear that there will be no changes to Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management plan, even after India’s loss in the first Test at Leeds. He confirmed that Bumrah will feature in only three Tests during the ongoing tour of England, sticking to the pre-decided strategy.
England defeated India by five wickets in the series opener at Headingley on June 24. Chasing a stiff target of 371, the hosts reached the mark in 82 overs during the final session on Day 5. Ben Duckett starred with a brilliant 149. While Bumrah impressed with a five-wicket haul in the first innings, he went wicketless in the second, finishing with figures of 0/57.
During the post-match press conference, Gautam Gambhir was asked whether the team management might reconsider Bumrah’s workload plan. The former India opener responded firmly, reiterating that there would be no deviation from the original plan. (Source: TOI)
“Haven’t decided which two matches Bumrah will play but he will play total of three. We need to manage his workload. Scoreline doesn’t change that… he will play three Tests only.”
After India’s loss in Leeds, skipper Shubman Gill said Bumrah’s participation would be decided on a game-by-game basis. He stated:
“It’s decided game-by-game. Once we’re close to the next game after a long break, we’ll see.”
Jasprit Bumrah’s Remarkable Test Career In Numbers
Jasprit Bumrah has built an exceptional Test career, taking 210 wickets in 46 matches at an impressive average of 19.60. His tally includes 14 five-wicket hauls and seven four-wicket hauls. Remarkably, 12 of his 14 five-fors have come in overseas conditions — four in Australia, three each in England and South Africa, and two in the West Indies.
He was particularly outstanding during the Australia tour, where he picked up 32 wickets. However, a back injury prevented him from bowling on the final day of the series. The team’s heavy reliance on Bumrah during that tour sparked discussions around his workload management.
