‘Very Unfortunate,’ Gautam Gambhir On Ravichandran Not Playing Limited Overs Cricket For India

Former India opening batsman Gautam Gambhir believes that Ravichandran Ashwin should be in the scheme of things for Team India’s limited-overs side. Ravichandran Ashwin along with Ravindra Jadeja were benched from the ODI and T20 sides after suffering a defeat against Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy Final.

Both Jadeja and Ashwin’s inability to take wickets in the middle overs resulted in their ouster from the side. Subsequently, the duo was replaced was Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal as the two formed a formidable pair who further even went on to feature in the 2019 World Cup. Though Jadeja marked his return during the 2018 Asia Cup in Dubai as Hardik Pandya, Ashwin still hasn’t got back his place in the limited-overs side as the likes of Axar Patel, Washington Sundar have been preferred over him.

‘Ravichandran Ashwin not being part of the white-ball scheme of things is very unfortunate’ – Gautam Gambhir

Despite now featuring in the limited-overs setup, Ashwin continues to be a vital part of the Indian Test side where he plays as the number one spinner in overseas Tests. After a successful stint with the Delhi Capitals franchise where Ashwin bowled in the powerplay overs providing Delhi with those early wickets, it was expected that Ashwin would earn a recall to the limited-overs sides but he continued to miss out on both the Australia and England series squads ever since.

Now Gautam Gambhir has come out in support of Ravichandran Ashwin saying the all-rounder not being a part of the limited-overs setup is nothing but unfortunate.

“Someone who is coming close to taking 400 wickets and at the same time getting five Test hundreds and still not being part of the white-ball scheme of things is very unfortunate. He is just a class act,” Gautam Gambhir told Star Sports.

He is just a quality bowler and his subtle variations. The amount of cricket he has played and the longevity he has played with and still the kind of impact he has had, it is just unbelievable,” Gautam Gambhir added.
