Rishabh Pant Achieves Historic Milestone In Perth Test

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has suggested that Test cricket should allow a full-fledged substitute, capable of both batting and bowling, in cases of serious injuries, not just concussions. His remarks came after the drawn fourth Test in Manchester, where Rishabh Pant played through a significant injury.

Pant suffered a fractured toe while attempting a reverse sweep during India’s first innings and had to retire hurt on 37. Despite the pain, he resumed his innings the following day and managed to score a gritty 54. However, due to the injury, Pant couldn’t keep wickets, and Dhruv Jurel stepped in behind the stumps. Under current ICC rules, Jurel was allowed to field but not bat.

Speaking to the media after the Test, Gambhir was asked if he supports introducing concussion-style substitutes for players with other serious injuries. In response, he advocated for a change in the rules to ensure fairer player replacement in such situations.

“Absolutely, I am all for it. If the umpires and the match referees see and feel that there is a major injury, I think it is very important to have this rule where you can get a substitute – that is if it is very visible. There is nothing wrong in it, especially in a series like this, where it’s been such a closely fought series.”

“In the previous three Test matches, imagine if we had to play with 10 men against 11, how unfortunate it would have been,” the 43-year-old added.

“Nothing Can Be Taken For Granted” – Gambhir Ahead Of Must-Win Oval Test

After Day 3 in Manchester, India looked set to trail 3-1, but strong resistance over the final two days earned them a draw. Gautam Gambhir said the team gained confidence from the fightback but emphasized that they’ll start afresh at The Oval.

“When you are put under the pump and end up batting five sessions, that shows great character. Anything that you do in these conditions when are put under pressure, it is a great feeling. I am sure going into The Oval we will be confident, but we can’t take anything for granted. It’s going to be a new game against a strong England side.”
