Australian star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell made a breathtaking catch on the boundary during the first T20I against South Africa at Darwin on Sunday, August 10. South Africa, chasing 179 to win, needed 21 runs off the last five balls with opener Ryan Rickelton on 71. Rickelton hit the ball towards long-on, seemingly destined for a six.
But Maxwell, off-balance and just inches from the boundary rope, managed to catch the ball, tossed it up in the air, stepped back into the field, and completed the catch. The remarkable catch required several reviews by the TV umpire before Rickelton was declared out. You can watch the video here:Â

The all-rounder’s exceptional boundary catch proved to be the decisive moment as the home team secured a 17-run victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Earlier, Maxwell had also taken a vital catch at first slip to dismiss the in-form Tristan Stubbs on 37, breaking a 72-run stand for the fourth wicket.
At 36 years old, Maxwell also delivered a strong bowling performance, restricting the South African batsmen with figures of 1/29 from his four overs.
Glenn Maxwell Struggles With The Bat Again In Australia’s First Innings
Before showcasing his skills in the field and with the ball, Glenn Maxwell endured another disappointing batting performance in the T20I series opener against South Africa. Coming in when Australia was struggling at 73/5, the right-hander cautiously played his first four deliveries.
However, he grew impatient on one of the next four balls and mistimed a shot outside off-stump, resulting in a catch at deep cover. This marked Maxwell’s 18th consecutive international innings without a half-century. The experienced player also had a tough IPL 2025 season with Punjab Kings, averaging just eight runs across seven matches.
It’s important to note that Maxwell retired from ODIs two months ago. Maxwell will aim to bounce back with the bat in the second T20I against South Africa, scheduled at the same venue on Tuesday, August 12.
