The All-India Senior Selection Committee, on Sunday, has announced the 17-member squad for the fifth and final Test match against England. Veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara has made a comeback to the Test squad after he was left out of the series against Sri Lanka.

Incidentally, the right-handed batter, who has been a vital cog of India’s Test batting line-up for almost a decade, endured a hard time in his recent Test assignments. However, Cheteshwar Pujara had a sensational County campaign.

The Saurashtra-born batter 720 runs in just five games for Sussex. This includes four centuries out of which two were converted to double tons. Pujara is happy that his County performances were recognised. Speaking to TOI, Cheteshwar Pujara said:

“I am glad to have been selected for the England Test, and happy that my recent county performances were recognized. Having spent some time in the middle during the county games, I do believe it will keep me in good stead as we get ready for the game against England.”

“As always, I’m looking forward to preparing and training well ahead of the tour, and do hope to continue contributing to the Indian team,” Pujara added.

India’s squad for South Africa tour

Young opener Shubman Gill has been named in the squad, in place of Mayank Agarwal. Incidentally, Gill suffered an injury ahead of the series against England last year and was withdrawn from the squad.

Shreyas Iyer – who made his impressive Test debut earlier this year – takes a middle-order slot ahead of Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane had already lost his Test spot during the home series against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

India’s Test squad: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul (vc) Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Mohd Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Prasidh Krishna
