“Hard to Swallow”: Rishabh Pant’s Emotional Post Goes Viral After England Loss

Vice-captain Rishabh Pant shared an emotional note on Instagram following India’s defeat against England in the first Test at Headingley. England successfully chased a massive 371-run target, handing India a five-wicket loss. Despite brilliant performances with the bat, poor bowling and fielding errors cost India the match.

Pant wrote, “It is going to sting us for a while but we BELIEVE in bouncing back stronger.” His powerful words reflected the frustration and determination in the Indian camp. Shubman Gill, the team’s captain, also took to Instagram and wrote, “Every battle leaves you sharper.”

This loss was historic in an unfortunate way for India. Despite four Indian batters scoring centuries—Pant hitting twin tons and KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Gill also scoring hundreds—India couldn’t convert the strong starts into match-winning totals. It became the first time in Indian Test history that a team lost despite five individual centuries in a match. The team collapsed dramatically in both innings. From a dominant 430/3 in the first innings, India were all out for 471, losing seven wickets for just 41 runs. A similar collapse happened in the second innings, where they fell from 333/4 to 364 all out, losing six wickets for only 31 runs.

Captain Gill Reflects On Key Mistakes

Shubman Gill admitted that the lack of support from the lower order and dropped catches were major reasons for the defeat. Speaking after the match, Gill said, “It was a brilliant Test match. We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn’t contribute enough, but proud of the team and overall a good effort.”

He mentioned that India had planned to declare at around 430 but ended up losing quick wickets, which hurt their momentum. “Unfortunately we didn’t score runs at the end which always makes it difficult. (It) just didn’t go our way in this match,” he added.

Young Team Learns The Hard Way

Gill also defended his squad, highlighting their inexperience. *“It’s a young team, (a) learning one and hopefully we will be able to improve on those aspects,”* he said when asked about the dropped catches. Jaiswal alone missed four chances.

Speaking about the final day’s play, Gill said India bowled well early but couldn’t maintain control after the ball softened. “That happens in a game of cricket. You expect that everything won’t go your way,” he explained. England capitalized and chased the target smoothly, leaving India with much to work on before the next match.
