Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf has been caught in controversy after his conduct during the Super 4 clash against India on September 21. While fielding near the boundary ropes, Rauf made the contentious ‘6-0’ hand gesture directed at Indian fans.
His actions came shortly after a tense moment with Indian batters Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill in the fifth over. Shubman Gill had played one of his trademark strokes, a short-arm jab, for a boundary off Rauf’s bowling. Following the shot, Gill and Abhishek celebrated with a fist bump, but Abhishek appeared provoked by Rauf’s remarks and turned back to exchange words with him.
This incident drew attention from both fans and officials. In response, the BCCI submitted a formal complaint to the International Cricket Council on Monday, urging action against Rauf for his behavior on the field. Reports confirmed that Rauf later appeared in the ICC hearing, where he “pleaded not guilty” on Friday. Even though he denied certain charges, the pacer is expected to be fined for using “abusive language and aggressive gestures” during the encounter.
Controversial Gestures and Taunts
Haris Rauf’s behavior did not stop with his on-field spat. He stirred further outrage by directing the “6-0” hand sign toward Indian supporters. This gesture symbolized Pakistan’s claim of shooting down six Indian fighter jets during the brief border clashes that followed Operation Sindoor, though the claim lacks evidence.
Adding to the controversy, Rauf mimicked the downing of a plane as a way of mocking India’s military action. The gestures were seen as a provocation after Indian fans in the crowd shouted “Kohli, Kohli,” reminding him of the sixes Virat Kohli smashed off his bowling in the thrilling T20 World Cup 2022 match in Melbourne. The act has since triggered a strong reaction, as it was seen as moving beyond cricket rivalry into sensitive political and national sentiments.
India vs Pakistan Final Showdown
While Rauf’s gestures have caused a storm, attention now shifts to the grand finale of the Asia Cup 2025, where India and Pakistan will meet for the third time in the tournament. Significantly, this will be the first time in 41 years that the two arch-rivals clash in the final of the continental championship.
India have maintained their dominance by staying unbeaten so far, showing consistency across matches. On the other hand, Pakistan enter the final having suffered two losses, both of which came against India. This historical face-off is expected to intensify the already heated atmosphere between the two sides, promising a high-stakes contest for the Asia Cup crown.
