[WATCH] Rohit Sharma Honors Legendary Skipper By Letting Him Lead Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Star Indian batter Rohit Sharma expressed his admiration for legendary captain Kapil Dev during a recent event in Kolkata. The occasion witnessed the presence of three of India’s most successful leaders — Rohit Sharma, Kapil Dev, and MS Dhoni. When the 1983 World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev invited Rohit to cut the ribbon, Rohit humbly declined and insisted that Kapil should do the honors.

Respecting Rohit’s gesture, Kapil Dev proceeded to cut the ribbon as both Rohit and Dhoni stood beside him, drawing applause from the crowd. After the inauguration, the trio entered the venue together. For the event, Rohit sported a blue coat, Kapil Dev opted for a black full-sleeve shirt with jeans, while Dhoni was seen in a cream-colored coat paired with white trousers.

Together, the three Indian captains boast six ICC titles. Kapil Dev guided India to their maiden World Cup triumph in 1983. Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, the team went on to secure the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. More recently, Rohit Sharma has added to the tally by leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Skipper Rohit Sharma Sets Sight On 2027 ODI World Cup

Rohit Sharma is putting in the hard yards to prepare himself for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Having stepped away from T20Is and Test cricket, he will now focus solely on representing India in the 50-over format. His immediate assignment will be the ODI series against Australia in October, though the long-term objective remains the upcoming World Cup.

At 38, Rohit has been working rigorously on both his batting and fitness. He has managed to shed 10 kilograms ahead of the Australia tour and also trained extensively at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where he successfully cleared his pre-season fitness tests.

So far, the veteran opener has featured in 273 ODIs, scoring 11,168 runs at an impressive average of 48.76, including 32 centuries and 58 fifties. His most recent international appearance came during the 2025 Champions Trophy in March, while his last competitive outing was in the IPL 2025.
