Rovman Powell finally lived up to the expectations as he guided Delhi Capitals (DC) to a crucial win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night. The giant West Indian smacked an unbeaten 33 off 16 balls to take the Capitals home.

It has been a difficult campaign so far for Powell but the all-rounder has repaid the trust shown by the franchise. As he hits the straps in IPL 2022, former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop has narrated a touching story about Rovman Powell.

He recalled that the cricketer promised his mother he would take them out of poverty when he was in secondary school. He explained that a lot of people want him to succeed because they are aware of the hardships he has endured growing up. Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Ian Bishop said:

“If anyone has the opportunity of 10 minutes to spare, go and look at Rovman Powell’s life story – a video on YouTube. You will see why so many people, including me, are happy that this guy has gotten a taste of the IPL. He has come from humble beginnings. He promised his mom that he will take them out of poverty when he was still in secondary school. He is living that dream to do that. Great story.”

Rovman Powell grew up with his mother and a sister in a small district called the Bannister District of Old Harbor in Jamaica. Growing up, he had to face a lot of hardships and struggled for food. He came to cricket mainly to bring his family out of poverty.

“He is very good against seam” – Ian Bishop on Rovman Powell

Idolising Andre Russell, Powell has come a long way and worked on his game which is there for everyone to see. Ian Bishop also highlighted that he is more than a decent player.

“I was trying to think back about his hundred against Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali in the Caribbean. He averaged 43 against India with these same spinners in India last February. He has improved a lot, is very good against seam and shows a great temperament,” Bishop added.

Delhi Capitals will want more such heroics from Rovman Powell as they chase a playoff berth in the ongoing 15th edition of the IPL.
