Former India cricketer-turned-commentator Robin Uthappa announced on Saturday, May 18, that MS Dhoni will return to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the next IPL season after the defending champions were eliminated from the current IPL in 2024.

Notably, Dhoni’s IPL 2024 campaign ended on a tragic note when he failed to lead CSK to a playoff berth in their final league game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Bengaluru.

For CSK to make the IPL 2024 playoffs, they needed to score 17 runs in the final over. Dhoni gave them hope when he hit Yash Dayal’s opening delivery for an incredible 110-meter six. The excitement, though, was fleeting as Dayal removed Dhoni while trying to replicate the stroke on the next ball.

At the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Dayal showed incredible bravery to lead RCB to a 27-run victory following Dhoni’s removal from the contest. The all-around talents of CSK, Shardul Thakur, and Ravindra Jadeja, failed to lead the defending champions to the IPL 2024 playoffs, leaving the Yellow Army 11 runs short.

In addition to stating that MS Dhoni would play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) again in 2025, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa also noted on Saturday that the former captain does not take losses and heartbreaks lightly. Uthappa also mentioned that Dhoni was dealing with a niggle during the season, raising the possibility that a healthier version of him will deliver even more next year.

“I don’t think we have seen the last of MS. He is not someone who takes these things lightly. He will come back roaring, for sure. Even with the narrative, I have seen him bat only in the last 4 or 5 overs, there is a reason for it,” Robin Uthappa said.

“He had a calf injury, which they initially thought perhaps was a niggle, but it was a little more grave than that. Because of that, he had to manage himself, and often, as he does, in international cricket and for CSK, he figured out a way to be useful and contribute to CSK.” Robin Uthappa Added.

The greatest time to declare his retirement, according to Dhoni, was after CSK won the championship last year. But as a “return gift” to the fans, he stated that he intended to put in a lot of effort and play for at least one more season.
