"How to hit a front foot cover drive...": Ashwin Lauded Harry Brook’s Perfect Cover Drive Shot Against SA

England’s final group-stage match against South Africa in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy may have been a dead-rubber, but it still drew plenty of attention. The game, held in Karachi, was a last chance for England to salvage some pride after an underwhelming campaign. Despite the loss, one positive that emerged was young batter Harry Brook’s exquisite front foot cover drive, which earned high praise from former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

What Makes a Perfect Front Foot Cover Drive?

A well-executed cover drive showcases a batter’s technical skill, requiring balance, precise foot movement, smooth weight transfer, and a controlled yet fluid follow-through. The shot demands the batter to stay upright and poised before making contact, step accurately towards the ball, move their body weight from the back foot to the front smoothly, and complete the motion with a controlled, free-flowing follow-through.

Ashwin’s Praise for Harry Brook’s Cover Drive

Ashwin analyzed Brook’s shot and highlighted several key elements. Brook positioned himself by stepping into the ball with his left foot, while his right leg, or back foot, released its weight onto the toe, facilitating a full transfer onto the front foot. This technique ensured that Brook had complete control and power behind the shot.

Ashwin said on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), “If you had to teach a youngster how to hit a front foot cover drive, these pictures will be the perfect depiction. Look at how Harry Brook moves in to the ball (pic on the left ) and then his right leg ( back foot ) releases weight on to the toe (pic on the right ) to transfer the entire body weight on to the front foot. What a talent.”

Harry Brook’s Performance in the Match

England’s top order crumbled early, leaving them at 37/3 when Brook arrived at the crease. Teaming up with Joe Root, Brook stabilized the innings, building a 62-run partnership off 61 balls. Displaying his usual aggressive intent, Brook struck three boundaries with elegance. His fluid stroke-making suggested he was on course for a big score before disaster struck.

Unfortunate Dismissal and Marco Jansen’s Spectacular Catch

Brook attempted to clear the ropes but found himself undone by Marco Jansen’s brilliance. Positioned at long-on, Jansen sprinted toward mid-wicket, slid on his knees, and clung onto the ball, ending Brook’s promising innings.

England’s Struggles in the Match

Despite Brook and Root’s efforts, England’s batting collapsed. The team was bowled out for 179 in 38.2 overs. Joe Root top-scored with 37 runs, while Jofra Archer contributed a quick 25 down the order. Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder led the bowling attack, taking three wickets each. Their disciplined performance ensured England never got back into the game.

England’s Overall Champions Trophy 2025 Performance

England’s campaign was filled with inconsistency, raising concerns before their upcoming home Test series against India. Adding to England’s woes, skipper Jos Buttler announced his decision to step down from the captaincy. The move, though unsurprising, sparked debate over who would take over the leadership.
