Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umar Nazir claimed the prized wicket of Rohit Sharma during the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match in Mumbai on Thursday, January 23. Rohit, returning to domestic cricket, was dismissed for just 3 runs off 19 balls.
Nazir consistently troubled the Mumbai opener with the new ball after Ajinkya Rahane chose to bat first. Attempting a signature leg-side flick off a back-of-length delivery, Rohit managed only a leading edge, which was safely caught at mid-off.
Nazir continued his dominance with the new ball, reducing Mumbai to 47-7 at one stage. A fighting half-century from Shardul Thakur helped the hosts reach 120, but Nazir was the standout bowler, finishing with impressive figures of 4-41 from 11 overs.
“I am big fan of Rohit Sharma and that is why I didn’t celebrate after taking his wicket today,” Umar Nazir told Indian Express.
At the conclusion of Day 1, Jammu and Kashmir have established a lead of 54 runs. Their captain, Paras Dogra, remains not out on 19, with the team’s first-innings score standing at 174-7 after 42 overs.
Umar Nazir Has Featured in 57 First-Class Matches Since 2013 Debut
The 31-year-old has been an important player for Jammu and Kashmir since his debut over ten years ago. Using his height to his advantage, he has regularly made an impact with the new ball, taking 138 wickets at an average of 29.12. His steady performances with the ball have made him one of the team’s most dependable fast bowlers.
He is expected to play a crucial role in the second innings, with a potential match-up against Rohit Sharma that could influence the outcome of the game. This battle could be a defining moment in the contest.
Previously, he has also served as a net bowler for the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), gaining valuable experience in the highly competitive T20 format.
