KKR All-Rounder Suffers Ankle Injury In Ranji Trophy Clash

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer faced a significant injury scare while representing Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25.

The incident occurred on Thursday, January 23, during a match against Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram, where Iyer twisted his ankle just two balls into his innings at No. 6, with Madhya Pradesh struggling at 49-5.

The all-rounder collapsed in pain after the injury, prompting the physio to assess him as he remained unable to stand. He eventually hobbled off the field with assistance. Despite the setback, Iyer showed resilience by returning to the crease later to aid his team’s efforts.

He played a gritty knock, scoring 42 off 80 balls, before being dismissed as the ninth wicket in the 61st over. Madhya Pradesh’s batting woes continued as they lost wickets regularly throughout the innings.

His return to action is a significant relief for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) management and fans, especially with the IPL 2025 season just a few months away.

Venkatesh Iyer Suffered a Broken Ankle in 2022

The twisted ankle likely triggered unpleasant memories for the all-rounder, who endured a similar but more severe injury in October 2022. During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign, he had twisted his ankle and suffered a fracture after a fall down a staircase.

“I played for India last year and then had a freak ankle injury. I had to go to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) just to start walking again,” Venkatesh Iyer had told Sportstar in an interview in 2023

It is yet to be determined whether Venkatesh Iyer’s all-round performance will be affected for the rest of the match. He has recently represented Madhya Pradesh in white-ball tournaments, consistently contributing with the ball in addition to his batting duties.
