Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar does not feel that Shikhar Dhawan will be a part of the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. The mega-event is all set to take place later this year in Australia.

Despite the senior players missing, Shikhar Dhawan failed to make a cut to India’s squad for the T20I series against South Africa. The team preferred the young batting duo of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad to open the innings.

Shikhar Dhawan was in decent form in the Indian Premier League 2022 season. He was the leading run-scorer for his franchise, Punjab Kings. His non-inclusion in the Indian team has surprised many.

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, that the veteran cricketer would have been part of the squad if he was in the plans for the World Cup. When the host Star Sports broadcaster asked about Shikhar Dhawan’s chances of playing in the T20 World Cup, Gavaskar said:

“No, I don’t see that. If it had to pop up it would have been in this squad. Because a lot of the guys have gone to England. It would have been in this squad. If he’s not in this squad, I don’t see his name in the mix.”

Dhawan last played for India a year ago in the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. He was the captain of the Indian team on the tour, however, does not find a player a year later. The veteran cricketer has an average of 27.92 in 68 T20Is, scoring 1759 runs at a strike rate of 126.36.

KL Rahul alongside Rohit Sharma – Sunil Gavaskar on India’s opening combination for ICC T20 World Cup

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar further stated that KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma will be his opening duo for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. KL Rahul suffered a groin injury before the start of the T20I series against South Africa. He was ruled out of the five-match series. The Indian opener headed to NCA, however, the exact time for recovery is not known yet.

“My opening combination would have KL Rahul if he’s fit and Rohit Sharma alongside him,” said Gavaskar on India’s opening pair for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

The Indian team will kick off their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against Pakistan on October 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
