Team India opener Shubman Gill aims to have a ‘breakthrough year’ at the No. 3 slot for the team in Test cricket. He expressed that his target is to do well in the new batting position for the national team. The five-match Test series between India and England got underway on Thursday, January 25 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Shubman Gill has been handed the No. 3 position duties for Team India replacing veteran Cheteshwar Pujara. So far, the youngster has played five matches at the position in Test cricket, scoring 166 runs at an average of 23.71. He hopes to make an impact in the Test series against Australia for his team. Talking to the broadcasters before the start of the first test, Shubman Gill said,
“Generally, when you are opening, you are more used to going straight away. It’s all about how calm you can be and how much assessment you can do while you are out there and I got that quite a few times to do.”
“In the first Test match, both Yashasvi and Rohit bhai scored a century, I sat there for about 50-60 overs. If I sit out for 50-60 overs today, I would be happy. I like batting at three, I hope I’ll be there for a long time,” the 24-year-old added.
This year is going to be a breakthrough year for me in red-ball cricket: Shubman Gill

The youngster also expressed that he aims to have a breakthrough year in red-ball cricket for India. Shubman Gill said,
“We are used to playing in these wickets and these conditions. It’s about trusting your defence and then being able to pounce on the opportunity that you get to score runs.”
“Last year was a breakthrough year for me in white-ball. This year, I believe, is going to be a breakthrough year for me in red ball,” he added.
