When passion meets fandom, it often creates waves and that’s exactly what happened when former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) cricketer Ambati Rayudu showered praise on MS Dhoni during a live broadcast. What started as an emotional analogy quickly spiraled into a full-blown controversy, with everyone from cricket legends to fans joining the conversation.
The Comment That Lit the Fire
During the CSK vs Punjab Kings match on April 8, Rayudu while doing Hindi commentary compared MS Dhoni to a warrior entering a battlefield with a sword in hand. His exact words: “Aisa lag raha hai talwar le kar aaye hain Dhoni, bilkul chalega talwar aaj.” (It looks like Dhoni has come with a sword; today his sword will definitely strike.)
Sharing the commentary box with Rayudu was none other than Navjot Singh Sidhu, a man known for his own flamboyant style. But this time, Sidhu didn’t hold back his disagreement. He later posted on X: “Dhoni cricket khelne aaye hain Guru? Yudh ladne nahi?” (Dhoni is here to play cricket, not fight a war.)
Rayudu’s Loyalty to Dhoni
Rayudu and Dhoni go way back. As part of CSK’s golden era, Rayudu has always stood by the man he calls “Thala”—a Tamil word for “leader” and a title MS Dhoni wears with pride.
In response to all the flak, Rayudu tweeted: “I was a Thala’s fan. I am a Thala’s fan I will always be a Thala’s fan. No matter what anyone thinks or does. It will not make a one percent difference. So please stop spending money on paid PR and donate that to charity. Lot of underprivileged people can benefit.”

MS Dhoni – More Than Just a Cricketer
With five IPL titles and countless “ice-in-veins” moments, Dhoni has carved a legacy like no other. He’s not just a captain; he’s a mentor, a finisher, and a leader in every sense. It’s not just the trophies. It’s his humility, calmness under pressure, and his ability to bring out the best in others including Ambati Rayudu. Rayudu himself has credited Dhoni for giving him confidence and freedom at CSK.
Match Recap – CSK vs PBKS
Chasing 187, CSK faltered despite a strong batting lineup. The top order couldn’t fire, and the run rate pressure built up quickly. Enter Dhoni at No. 5. The stadium erupted. He smashed 27 runs off just 12 balls, including three towering sixes and a four. But it was too little, too late. CSK fell short by 18 runs. While Dhoni gave fans hope, the team couldn’t seal the deal.
Dhoni as Captain Again
CSK’s young captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to an elbow fracture, sustained from a Jofra Archer short ball. A major blow. Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed it:
“Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out of the season due to a hairline fracture. MS Dhoni to lead.” And just like that, the legend returns to the helm. Fans couldn’t be happier. “Captain Cool” is back!

CSK’s Road Ahead
Chennai Super Kings will face Kolkata Knight Riders next, with the match set for April 11 in Chennai. Dhoni must find a way to turn things around after Gaikwad’s absence, as the team needs to regroup and rebuild momentum.
