After a lackluster performance by Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup, Babar Azam has chosen to relinquish his captaincy across all cricket formats. Azam expressed the difficulty of this decision but emphasized that it was the opportune moment to make this call. The announcement came following a meeting with Zaka Ashraf, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Interim Management Committee, in Lahore.
Recalling the moment he assumed leadership in 2019, Azam acknowledged the highs and lows experienced during his tenure, stating his sincere commitment to upholding Pakistan’s honor in the cricketing world. Grateful for the collective efforts of players, coaches, and management that led to achieving the top spot in the white-ball format, he extended thanks to the ardent Pakistani cricket fans for their steadfast support.
In a social media post, Azam conveyed, “Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision, but I feel it is the right time for this call. I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats, supporting the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication.”
The decision was prompted by widespread criticism directed at Azam after Pakistan’s failure to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals, winning only four out of nine group-stage matches. The defeat against Afghanistan particularly marked a turning point, pushing Pakistan to the brink of elimination.
Following the announcement, footage aired on television depicted fans swarming Babar Azam’s car as he left the PCB headquarters at the Gaddafi Stadium after the meeting with Zaka Ashraf. The meeting, reportedly focused on the future of Azam’s captaincy, also included discussions with team director Mickey Arthur, head coach Grant Bradburn, and other members of the interim management committee.
Pakistani fans lauded Azam for his decision to step down, expressing optimism for his future. One social media user, Zainab Mubeen Ul Haq, remarked, “Don’t know about the cricket but your good days are starting.” Another user acknowledged Azam’s achievements as captain, foreseeing a new chapter in his career as a batsman.
