ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: [WATCH] Suryakumar Yadav’s Comical Run-Out Sets The Stage For Intense IND vs NZ World Cup Clash

In the high-stakes clash between India and New Zealand at Dharamsala during the World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav faced a disheartening setback on his World Cup debut. The right-handed batsman had a comical mix-up with team captain Virat Kohli, resulting in his run-out for just two runs off four balls.

This unfortunate incident occurred in the 34th over of India’s run chase. Yadav had just played a delivery from Trent Boult towards the cover and set off for a run. However, Virat Kohli was cautious, waiting for the ball to clear the fielder. What followed was a series of events that left Yadav stranded.

Mitchell Santner, displaying incredible fielding skills, made a full-length dive to stop the ball and forced Kohli to retreat to the non-striker’s end. Meanwhile, Yadav had already covered more than half of the pitch.

Santner swiftly threw the ball to Boult, who was strategically positioned in the middle of the pitch. The left-arm pacer, with a clever underarm flick, sent the ball back to wicketkeeper Tom Latham, resulting in a straightforward runout.
Replays of the incident revealed that Kohli had a chance to complete the run, but he opted for a safer approach, which unfortunately cost Yadav his wicket.

The Indian innings also saw contributions from Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, who scored 33 (off 29 balls) and 27 (off 35 balls), respectively. Trent Boult dismissed Iyer, while Mitchell Santner trapped Rahul leg-before-wicket (lbw). At the time of writing, India was at 252/5 after 45.3 overs, with Virat Kohli standing firm at 80* and Ravindra Jadeja accompanying him at 34*.

In the match’s first innings, New Zealand posted a total of 273 runs in their allotted 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell played a spectacular innings, scoring 130 runs off 127 balls, which included five sixes and nine boundaries.

He combined with Rachin Ravindra, who contributed 75 runs off 87 balls, with one maximum and six fours. The duo’s remarkable 159-run partnership for the third wicket led New Zealand’s recovery from a precarious position of 19/2.

In the run chase, Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started the innings strongly, sharing a 71-run opening partnership. Sharma played a fiery knock, making 46 runs off 40 balls, with four sixes and as many boundaries, while Gill contributed 26 runs off 31 balls. However, Lockie Ferguson’s crucial breakthroughs dismissed both openers and brought New Zealand back into the contest.

Despite the early setbacks, India’s hopes still rested on the capable shoulders of Virat Kohli, who seemed set to guide his team to victory in the 274-run chase. Mohammed Shami played a pivotal role with the ball, securing figures of 5/54 in his first 2023 World Cup match, while Kuldeep Yadav also contributed with two wickets.
