The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken a notable step by removing match referee Andy Pycroft from overseeing Pakistan’s fixtures in the Asia Cup. The move came after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed strong dissatisfaction with Pycroft’s handling of the controversial incident during the high-profile India vs Pakistan clash on September 14.
According to PCB officials, Pycroft allegedly advised both captains to avoid the traditional post-toss handshake, which the board interpreted as favoritism towards the Indian side.
This incident sparked outrage in Pakistan, leading to complaints lodged with the ICC and demands for immediate corrective action. The board even warned of possible withdrawal from the tournament if its concerns were ignored.
Richie Richardson Steps In
Responding to PCB’s objection, the ICC confirmed that Pycroft would no longer be officiating in Pakistan’s matches for the remainder of the Asia Cup. Instead, senior match referee Richie Richardson has been appointed to take charge, starting with Pakistan’s third and final Group A match scheduled for September 17.
The decision highlights the seriousness of PCB’s complaint and reflects the ICC’s attempt to ensure neutrality and maintain harmony in a tournament already marred by tensions.
Notably, this is not a one-match change; Pycroft’s removal extends across all of Pakistan’s remaining fixtures in the competition, signalling the governing body’s intent to restore trust and avoid further controversy.
Growing Pressure on ICC and ACC
The PCB has doubled down on its stance by sending a second formal letter to the ICC, stressing that the issue was not being taken lightly. Reports also suggest that Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB chairman and head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), has hinted at drastic steps—including the possibility of resigning from his ACC role—if Pakistan’s grievances are dismissed.
This development places both the ICC and the ACC under mounting pressure to manage the situation carefully, as Pakistan remains a key stakeholder in Asian and international cricket.
With the Asia Cup serving as a crucial prelude to the upcoming ICC tournaments, the controversy has drawn considerable attention. The episode underscores the sensitive dynamics of India-Pakistan cricket relations, where even minor gestures can escalate into major disputes.
