Former India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has highlighted India’s batting weaknesses against the leg spinners. The Virat Kohli-led team suffered their second consecutive defeat in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 on Sunday.

Batting first, India managed to score only 110 runs in 20 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja’s 26* being the top score. Trent Boult picked three wickets while Ish Sodhi bagged two wickets for New Zealand. In reply, the Kiwis chased down the score comfortably, handing India a defeat by 8 wickets.

While analyzing the game, in a video on his Facebook account, Sachin Tendulkar highlighted India’s weakness against the leg spinners. He pointed out, that both Sodhi and Santner troubled the Indian batters. Tendulkar said,

“I’ve noticed one thing, which is that the leg spinners who are mixing their deliveries, bowling googlies, top-spin, flipper, and normal leg-spin have been successful in the recent past against India.”

“Ish Sodhi was very effective, and on the other end, Santner also bowled well. Both gave only 32 runs in eight overs, which is a very impactful performance. I believe this is the area where we have to improve,” he added.

Need to pick at least three wickets in first six overs, while defending low totals: Sachin Tendulkar

The legendary cricketer expressed that India needed quick wickets in the powerplay to make comeback in the second innings. However, the bowlers failed to make an impactful start, he added. New Zealand was 44/1 in the power play and chased down the target in just 15 overs. Tendulkar said,

“In (defending) such totals, you need to pick at least three wickets in the first six overs. We didn’t concede many runs, Bumrah took one wicket but it wasn’t an impactful start,”

“We started with Varun Chakravarthy, the mystery bowler. If their openers hadn’t picked him, we had chances to take quick wickets. But it didn’t happen,” he added.
