Afghanistan became the latest team to name 15 15-member squad for the upcoming T20I World Cup to be played in the West Indies and United States of America. The batting order looks strong with Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbaidn Naib, Najibullah Zadran, and Karim Janat.
Mohammad Ishaq has been included in the squad and was a part of the Under 19 World Cups in 2020 and 2022. The pace bowling options include Naveen UL Haq, Fazallahq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmad Malik retained their spots for the mega event. Azamatullah Omarzai can do the job with both bat and ball.
Rashid Khan would lead the side. Rashid, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Noor Ahmad would comprise spin bowling options. These three spin bowlers can create trouble for batters for various teams. Nangal Kharoti made his debut against Ireland this year and has been included in the squad. He took 5 wickets from 3 matches with an economy of just 5.90 runs per over.
Afghanistan Schedule for WC 2024
Afghanistan has been clubbed with hosts West Indies, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda. They would begin their journey against debutant Uganda on 3rd June at Providence Stadium, Guyana.
After this, they would face a tough challenge against New Zealand on 7th June at Providence Stadium, Guyana. Afghanistan will take on Papua New Guinea in their third match on 13th June at Brian Lara Cricket Stadium, Trinidad.
They would finish their league stage against hosts West Indies at Darren Sammy Cricket Ground, Gros Islet, St Lucia. Â This is a tough group as New Zealand and host West Indies will provide tough challenges.
Afghanistan performed brilliantly in the ICC T20 WC 2022. They qualified directly for the mega event in Australia. It was a disappointing outing as Afghanistan finished last in Group 1 of the Super 12 stage.
They played a total of 6 matches with 3 losses and 2 no results. Afghanistan almost stunned Australia losing the match by 4 runs.
