The Indian Cricket Team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 has been announced. The tournament will be played in the West Indies and the United States of America. Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli will be the three opening options included by BCCI. Shubman Gill has been included as the reserves with Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan for the mega event.
Meanwhile, the Gujarat Titans have struggled in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 so far under the captaincy of Shubman Gill. Apart from a few good knocks, Gill looked out of touch not hitting big shots in the first six overs and keeping the momentum going for his team. His best score came in a match-winning effort against Rajasthan Royals of 72 that helped Gujarat Titans lay a strong foundation for them to win the match out of nowhere.
“It is difficult for Shubman Gill to make it to the T20 World Cup side. We have to look at the top three players that are in the squad. It is not about not having the ability, but someone has to miss out due to the abundance of talent in the side. Make no mistake, Shubman Gill is a deserving candidate, but these three are the best (Rohit, Yashasvi, Virat),” Parthiv Patel said on Jio Cinema.
Shubman could play in the T20 World Cup 2024 if Jaiswal gets injured or does not perform well in the league stages of the tournament. Indian team would start their tournament against Ireland on 5th June. They will face arch-rivals Pakistan on the 9th of June before they face the USA on the 12th.
The final match of the group stage will be played on 15th June against Canada. The first three matches will be played in New York while the final match will be played in Lauderhill.
Performance of Shubman Gill in IPL 2024
After being appointed as the captain of the Gujarat Titans side this season, Shubman Gill’s form dipped drastically leading to the runners-up of the 2023 edition struggling badly.
Gill could post a good amount of runs to be in contention for the T20 World Cup squad. They can change the members without ICC permission till 25th May. After that, they need to ask the technical committee for substitutes.
GT captain Shubman Gill has scored so far 320 runs in 10 matches (10 innings) with 2 half-centuries to his name including the best score of 89 not out against Punjab Kings. His strike rate has not been great this season with 140.97.
His best season during the 2023 edition with 890 runs from 17 matches (17 innings) with 3 centuries and 4 half-centuries to his name including best score of 129 at a strike rate of 157.80. He was awarded the Orange Cap for his consistent performances for GT while opening the innings.
