In the first ODI against Australia on September 22 in Mohali, Ruturaj Gaikwad, the opener for Team India, achieved his first-ever fifty in ODI cricket. This match marked his debut as an opener in the ODI format. Australia batted first, posting a total of 276 runs in 50 overs, with David Warner as their top scorer, contributing 52 runs.

Shubman Gill set a quick pace for India’s innings with elegant boundary shots all around the ground, while Gaikwad (71) played a supporting role, displaying his skill with beautiful shots. Gaikwad effectively handled the new ball and ensured consistent runs, adding stability to the top order in the absence of Rohit Sharma.

Gaikwad capitalized on scoring opportunities, regularly finding the boundary. He reached his maiden fifty in the 18th over with a pair of runs and attempted to accelerate by hitting two consecutive fours at the end of an over. However, his 77-ball innings came to an end in the 22nd over when Adam Zampa dismissed him through LBW.

Fans acknowledged Gaikwad’s performance against Australia and shared their thoughts on social media, including X (formerly known as Twitter).

Here are some of their reactions:

Former Indian wicket-keeper Kiran More expressed his support for Ruturaj Gaikwad and suggested that Gaikwad possesses the potential to eventually lead Team India. More emphasized that Gaikwad’s cricketing skills are well-rounded, making him a valuable player across all formats due to his strong technique.

More also pointed out that Gaikwad’s experience of playing alongside MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League likely played a significant role in his growth and development as a cricketer.

In a recent conversation on Jio Cinema, More shared his thoughts, stating:

Ruturaj can play all formats, his basics are so correct. He can be the future captain of India as well, he has got a great temperament. He’s playing under MS Dhoni, so he must have learnt things about handling the team and handling the situations. He’s a quality player, and I’m waiting for him to make his Test debut.”
