IND vs AUS: Kapil Dev Asks Everyone To Stop Compare Suryakumar Yadav With Sanju Samson

The Indian Cricket Team was handed 21 run defeat in the 3rd One-day international match played at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 22 March 2023.

Suryakumar Yadav had a disappointing outing in the three ODI matches played against Australia being dismissed for golden ducks. Fans looked unhappy with the selection of Surya Kumar Yadav and wanted Sanju Samson instead of him.

Indian World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev talks about the comparison between Surya Kumar Yadav and Sanju Samson does not seem right.

“A cricketer who has played so well will always get more chances. Don’t compare Surya with Sanju Samson, it doesn’t seem right. If Sanju goes through a bad phase, then you will talk about somebody else. This should not happen. If the team management has decided to back Suryakumar Yadav then he should be given more chances. Yes, people will talk, and give their opinion but ultimately it’s the management’s call,” said Kapil Dev.

“It’s very easy to talk after the match is finished. Maybe the idea behind sending Suryakumar at No.7 was to give him an opportunity as a finisher. This (shuffling of the batting order) is nothing new in ODIs. This has happened many times before.

Yes, at times it can happen that a batter’s confidence is dented if he has been dragged down the order. But the onus rests on the player to tell his captain that ‘I can handle myself in the top order.’ The coach and captain must have taken the decision with particular thinking,” said Kapil Dev.

Surya Kumar Yadav was dismissed by Mitchell Starc in the first two ODI matches at Mumbai and Vizag. He could not sustain the pressure and was cleaned up by Ashton Agar in the third ODI match played in Chennai.

Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson’s performance in ODIs

Sanju Samson has not been given proper chances in the ODI format. He has featured in 11 ODIs for Team India with 330 runs including 2 half-centuries. Samson showed his class with 86 and almost took India home.

Suryakumar Yadav played 23 ODI matches with 433 runs including 2 half-centuries and the best score of 64. Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the series against Australia due to a back injury.

If Shreyas Iyer does not recover in time, the selectors should give chances to Sanju Samson and hope that Suryakumar rediscovers his form.
