India bounced back strongly from their 76-run defeat to South Africa with a stunning batting display against Zimbabwe in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, the team piled up a massive 256 for 4 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
This became the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history, falling just short of Sri Lanka’s 260 for 6 against Kenya in Johannesburg in 2007. It also marked India’s highest-ever score in T20 World Cup history, going past their previous best of 218 for 4 against England in Durban in 2007. The 256 for 4 is the highest total recorded in the current edition as well. India smashed 17 sixes during the innings, equalling their record for most sixes in a T20 World Cup match, previously achieved against Australia in 2024.
Abhishek Sharma Finds Form Again
After struggling with illness and registering three consecutive ducks, Abhishek Sharma finally returned to form on a batting-friendly Chepauk pitch. The left-hander looked confident and fluent, easing concerns about his recent dip in performance. He stitched together two crucial partnerships — a 48-run opening stand with Sanju Samson and a 72-run partnership off just 42 balls with Ishan Kishan, who scored 38. Samson’s quick 24 off 15 balls helped settle early nerves before he was dismissed attempting a big shot off Blessing Muzarabani.
Abhishek then took control, attacking bowlers like Tino Maposa, Brian Bennett and Richard Ngarava with clean hitting. India raced to 80 for 1 in the Power Play, their second-best Power Play total in a T20 World Cup. Abhishek brought up his half-century in just 26 balls, showing sharp footwork and excellent timing. Though Zimbabwe dropped a few catches, including those of Kishan and Suryakumar, Abhishek’s aggressive knock ended when he was caught in the deep.
Middle Order Finishes In Style
Even after Abhishek’s dismissal, the momentum did not slow down. India reached 100 in 9.1 overs, and the next 100 runs came in only 7.3 overs, reflecting the relentless pace of scoring. Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma provided the perfect finishing touch with an unbeaten 84-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Pandya remained not out on 50, while Tilak added 44 without being dismissed. The duo capitalised brilliantly in the final five overs, adding 80 runs to push India to a towering total. This powerful performance not only revived India’s campign but also sent a strong message to their rivals in the tournament.
