Indian captain Shubman Gill has reportedly been released from the squad due to a worrying neck injury ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. His participation had been in doubt ever since he left the field on Day 2 of the opening Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

There was a glimmer of hope when Gill travelled with the team to Guwahati, and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak even stated in a pre-match press conference that the skipper was recovering well. However, his absence from training sessions in the lead-up to the game raised further concerns.

Ultimately, India have had to make the tough call to release their captain midway through the series while already trailing. As per a Times of India report, Gill has departed from Guwahati and is heading to Mumbai to consult a specialist about his neck issue, which appears to be significantly troubling him.

“India Test captain Shubman Gill has been released from the squad ahead of the Guwahati Test and has already left for Mumbai on Friday. The youngster travelled with the side on November 19 but didn’t turn up for training on November 20.”

“It is learnt that he will be resting in Mumbai for the next two-three days before seeking specialist opinion from Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. As of now, there is no trip planned to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) and more clarity is expected in the coming days,” the report mentions.

Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala treating multiple Team India injury cases

Dinshaw Pardiwala is a highly respected orthopedic specialist with expertise in sports medicine. He played a key role in overseeing Rishabh Pant’s rehabilitation following the serious car accident he suffered in late 2024, which left him with significant injuries.

In addition, Pardiwala has recently been approached for his guidance on injuries sustained by players such as Shreyas Iyer and Pratika Rawal during their time with Team India.
