India’s Test opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, has confirmed his availability for Mumbai’s upcoming Ranji Trophy clash against Jammu & Kashmir. His announcement follows an impressive stint on the Australian tour, providing much-needed optimism for Indian cricket fans.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Decision to Return
Despite India’s struggles in Australia, Jaiswal’s consistent performance stood out. Scoring both a century and a half-century during the tour, he proved his mettle and justified his place in the squad. The match, scheduled for January 23 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, promises an intriguing contest. Jaiswal’s inclusion strengthens the Mumbai lineup, giving them a significant edge.
“He has informed Mumbai coach Omkar Salvi that he is available for the next round of the Ranji Trophy. The selection committee will pick the Mumbai team in the coming days,” a MCA official said.
Mumbai’s Star-Studded Lineup
On Tuesday, Rohit Sharma joined the Mumbai squad at the Wankhede, training alongside captain Ajinkya Rahane. If both players make themselves available, Mumbai’s batting lineup will feature exceptional firepower. Rohit’s last appearance for Mumbai dates back to 2015. His potential return excites fans and strengthens the team’s prospects in the Ranji Trophy.
Rohit’s underwhelming performance on the Australian tour, accumulating just 35 runs in five innings, raised eyebrows. He opted out of the final Test in Sydney, citing poor form. Rohit’s decision to step down reflected the mounting pressure on him. This upcoming Ranji Trophy game offers him a chance to regain his confidence and form.
Importance of Domestic Cricket
Domestic cricket is pivotal for nurturing talent. The BCCI recently emphasized the significance of participating in domestic tournaments to all top players.
In February last year, then-BCCI Secretary Jay Shah sent a stern reminder to centrally contracted and India A players. The letter highlighted the critical role domestic cricket plays in maintaining the country’s cricketing backbone.

Sarfaraz Khan’s Injury
Middle-order batsman Sarfaraz Khan has been sidelined with a rib injury. His absence weakens the Mumbai lineup, leaving a void that must be filled. Being a contracted player with the BCCI, Sarfaraz’s injury status will be closely monitored by the National Cricket Academy, ensuring proper rehabilitation and recovery.
“He has injured one of his ribs and he has informed us that he won’t be playing the next Ranji Trophy game. As he is contracted with the BCCI, the National Cricket Academy will do his medical assessment and inform us,” the MCA official added.
