India batter Shubman Gill is poised to make his much-anticipated return to the Ranji Trophy after over two years when the 2024/25 season resumes on January 23. Gill’s decision aligns with the increasing emphasis on domestic cricket for India’s star players following their underwhelming performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) confirmed Gill’s availability for the match against Karnataka, a crucial fixture as both teams vie for dominance in Group C. Despite sharing six wins each from seven matches, Punjab trails Karnataka due to net run rate.
Gill’s Limited Red-Ball Appearances Since Test Debut
Shubman Gill has had minimal exposure to red-ball domestic cricket in recent years. Excluding a Duleep Trophy game in September 2024, the 24-year-old has featured in only one red-ball domestic match in the past four years. His last Ranji Trophy outing was in June 2022, where he managed modest scores of 9 and 19 in Punjab’s quarterfinal defeat against Madhya Pradesh.
Notably, this was his sole Ranji appearance since making his Test debut against Australia during the Boxing Day Test in December 2020. Gill’s re-entry into domestic cricket signals an effort to regain form and consistency after a lackluster showing in Australia, where his scores across four innings were 31, 28, 1, and 20.
Rohit Sharma and Other Stars Eye Ranji Matches
Meanwhile, reports suggest India captain Rohit Sharma may join Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy preparations. The 37-year-old informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) about attending the team’s practice session, though his participation in the January 23 game against Jammu and Kashmir remains unconfirmed. According to an MCA source, other prominent players, including Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur, and Shreyas Iyer, are expected to train alongside Rohit. Sharma’s involvement would bolster Mumbai’s lineup and highlight a broader trend of senior players turning to domestic cricket for rhythm and match fitness.
Gill’s and Sharma’s domestic commitments come at a critical juncture for Indian cricket, as the focus shifts to strengthening individual performances and enhancing preparation for future international challenges.
