Rohit Sharma will be officially leading his first game as the T20I skipper of the Indian cricket team against New Zealand in Jaipur on Wednesday (November 17). He along with coach Rahul Dravid have been given the responsibility to churn about a team that competes at the next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia. It all starts with the series against New Zealand.

Ahead of the first T20I, an old tweet from Rohit Sharma has gone viral. He made this tweet back in 2012 when he led Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy game for the first time against Rajasthan at the KL Saini Ground in Jaipur. Now as India’s full-time T20I skipper, his old tweet has great relevance and importance.

“Touched down in jaipur and yes I will be leading the side, looking forward to the added responsibility :)” Rohit tweeted in 2012.

It is in Jaipur again nine years later that he starts his journey as the skipper of the Indian team. In the pre-match press conference, he spoke about his vision with the team along with Rahul Dravid at the helm of affairs.

“It was way back in 2007 when I was selected, but the first time I had the opportunity to interact with him was in Bangalore at a camp. It was a very brief chat and I was actually kind of very nervous and I never used to talk so much even with my age group people so leave alone these guys at that point,” Rohit said.

What Rohit Sharma Has Achieved For Indian Cricket Is Phenomenal: Rahul Dravid

Head coach Rahul Dravid remembered Rohit’s international debut under him back in 2007 against Ireland.

“We all knew that Rohit was going to be special. We could just see that he was a very special talent. That I would so many years later be working with him that I never thought about or envisaged… but honestly, the way he has grown as a leader, as a person over these last 14 years now. What he’s achieved both as an India player and as a leader for the Mumbai Indians is phenomenal” said Dravid.

After the first T20I in Jaipur later tonight, the next two will be played Ranchi (November 19) and Kolkata (November 21), followed by Tests in Kanpur (November 25-29) and Mumbai (December 3-7).
