Australian fast bowler Patrick Cummins was ruled out of the current season of Indian Premier League with a back injury on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Cummins who has a long history of back issues had experienced soreness during the recent fourth Test match against South Africa. scans revealed a bone oedema in his vertebrae. He was signed for the Mumbai Indians for the T20 tournament which started earlier this weekend on April 7.

Cummins was bought by the current IPL champions for 5.4 crores at the auction earlier in January this year having previously played for the Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Team physiotherapist David Beakley said: “It is important that Pat has time off bowling, to prevent the injury becoming more serious and consequently we have made the decision to rule Pat out of the IPL.

“Pat will now undergo a period of recovery and rehabilitation and we will look to re-scan him in a few weeks to assess the healing.

“Following this we will be in a better position to decide on Pat’s return to play timeline including participation in the limited overs tour of the UK.”

This latest injury setback for the superstar quick also puts doubts for his inclusion in the squad for Australia”s five-match ODI series and a one-off T20 against England starting from June later this year.

This could turn out to be a huge blow for the Mumbai Indians as Cummins is one of the best Fast bowlers going around the globe and was the lone shining star for the Australian unit in the controversy-marred 3-1 series defeat against South Africa in the series which just concluded.
