IPL 2018: Sunrisers Hyderabad defend 118 to beat Mumbai Indians

Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers showed their class by defending a modest total of 118 runs to beat Mumbai Indians in the 23rd match of IPL 2018 by 31 runs at Wankedhe Stadium, Mumbai just a few minutes ago. Winning the toss, Rohit Sharma elected to field first and bowled out SRH for 118. While chasing, they lost wickets at regular intervals and bowled out for 87 runs.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first. Shikhar Dhawan who came back into today’s match after an injury started played an attacking shot before Mitchell McClenaghan dismissed Dhawan and Wriddhiman Saha in quick succession. Manish Pandey and Kane Williamson added 24 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Pandey and Shakib AL Hasan were dismissed in quick succession to leave Sunrisers Hyderabad in big trouble at 46 for 4. At the end of 6 overs, SRH scored 51 for 4. After the powerplay overs, Kane Williamson and Nabi added 19 runs for the 5th wicket. SRH captain Kane Williamson was dismissed by Hardik Pandya for 29 runs.

Mumbai Indians bowlers did a brilliant job to bowl out Sunrisers Hyderabad for 118 in 18.4 overs. Yusuf Pathan scored important 29 runs and was the last batsman to be dismissed. Hardik Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan and Markande picked 2 wickets each.

Chasing 119, Sandeep Sharma got the early breakthrough dismissing dangerous Evin Lewis for 5 runs. Ishan Kishan soon departed for 0. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan for 0. At the end of 6 overs, Mumbai Indians scored 22 for 3.

Krunal Pandya and Surya Kumar Yadav steadied the innings with 40 runs stand for the 4th wicket. Rashid Khan dismissed Krunal Pandya for 24 runs off 20 balls with a review for LBW by Rashid Khan. Umpire gave it not out SRH captain decided to review it and the decision was reversed.

Rashid Khan dismissed Kieron Pollard for 9 runs to give Sunrisers Hyderabad hope of winning the match.  Surya Kumar Yadav who was batting well went for 34 runs. McClenaghan, Markande also fell in quick succession. Hardik Pandya could only score 3 off 18 balls.

Mustafizur Rahman was the last batsman to be dismissed for 1 run. Mumbai Indians were bowled out for 87 in 18.5 overs.

Siddarth Kaul was the pick of bowlers for SRH taking 3 wickets. Basil Thampi and Rashid Khan picked 2 wickets each.

SRH 118 in 18.4 overs ( Kane Williamson 29, Yusuf Pathan 29, Mitchell McClenaghan 2/22, Hardik Pandya 2/20, Markande 2/15) beat

MI 87 in 18.5 overs ( Surya Kumar Yadav 34, Krunal Pandya 24, S Kaul 3/23) by 31 runs.

MI captain Rohit Sharma said: It was a poor batting display by our team. To chase down 118 runs on any pitch was going to be easy. Our batters have let down us again. We needed to show some intent but the shot making was poor. A few of us played bad shots especially myself.

SRH captain Kane Williamson said: It was a remarkable bowling performance to defend 118 was a tough ask. Despite Bhuvneshwar Kumar not in today’s game, S Kaul, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Basil Thampi bowled well. It was tough wicket to bat on. We did expect a lot of things from our batting unit. We are yet to perform well as a unit and need to perform well in the upcoming matches.

Man of the match Rashid Khan said: It feels good to come back after 2 losses. The coaching staff has been cooperative and wanted me to stay relax. Despite scoring 118, the bowlers did a brilliant job to bowl Mumbai Indians for just 87.

When these two teams met first time in IPL 2018, SRH defeated Mumbai Indians in the last ball thriller by 1 wicket. Mumbai Indians have played 6 matches, winning 1 and losing 5.

Chennai Super Kings will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore in tomorrow’s match.
