Sunrisers Hyderabad dropped Jonny Bairstow in a must-win match against Delhi Capitals. This came as a shock to everyone as Bairstow has been an integral part of SRH in IPL 2020. However, the franchise opted to play Kane Williamson instead of him and Wriddhiman Saha opened with David Warner.

Eventually, this proved to be a masterstroke as Saha played an outstanding match-winning knock of 87 from mere 45 balls. SRH registered a massive victory of 88 runs and kept their hopes alive of reaching the IPL 2020 playoffs. Coming back to Jonny Bairstow’s omission, SRH coach Trevor Bayliss and captain Warner revealed why was Bairstow excluded from the playing XI.

SRH Coach Reveals Why Was Jonny Bairstow Dropped

Trevor Bayliss stated that his side needed a fast-bowling all-rounder in the match hence Jason Holder needed to be included. On the other hand, Williamson had also looked in terrific touch before he got injured. Once Williamson was available Jonny Bairstow had to sit out as a side can only play 4 overseas players.

“Look, we wanted to play the all-rounder (Jason Holder) in the middle just to give us some more bowling. It gives it another option with five bowlers plus Vijay Shankar. From Jonny’s point of view, that meant one of the top-three batters had to miss out”.

“Kane [Williamson] has been batting very well for us when available, and obviously the other overseas is the captain so, Jonny was the odd one out on this occasion. But look, with the way Jonny plays, I’m sure he will play a lot more”, stated Bayliss as quoted by Metro news.

Meanwhile, Bairstow has so far made a total of 345 runs in 11 matches this season. In the post-match presentation, Skipper Warner too accepted that it was a difficult call to leave out Bairstow from the SRH side.

“It was a very tough call, especially with Jonny playing as well as he has. We felt picking Kane would work out”, said Warner.

Furthermore, it turned out to be a memorable match for SRH as they recorded a thumping win over DC. SRH will now have to win their remaining two league matches to remain in discussion for the IPL playoffs.
