Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will have a tough task on figuring out who are the players they should retain ahead of next season. Two new teams will be added next year which makes the IPL 2022 a 10-team tournament. Meanwhile, former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir have had his say on the players the franchise should retain.
Talking to ESPN Cricinfo, Gautam Gambhir was asked about the players Banglore should retain ahead of next season. He was asked if the franchise should retain their big three players the trio of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Yuzvendra Chahal for the next edition of the IPL.
Gambhir responded: “Yes, I would just want to add that between Harshal Patel and Chahal, one can be picked. So, it’s up to them whether they want to pick either Chahal or Harshal.”
Asked about the chances of RCB not retaining AB de Villiers for the next IPL, Gambhir said: “Yes, because I think they will retain Glenn Maxwell since he is the future, and AB de Villiers is not.”
Gambhir had another take on Kohli’s decision of stepping down from captaincy. He said Kohli’s decision might not have egged the players to not perform at their best.
Time Wasn’t Right For Virat Kohli: Gautam Gambhir
“I guess the timing wasn’t right. If he had to quit as captain, he could have done that even after the tournament. He was in this situation, where it wasn’t like RCB was not in a position to qualify. They were pretty much in so I believe that had he resigned after the tournament, it would have been better,” he said.
Virat Kohli will now join the rest of the Indian players for the T20 World Cup to be played in the UAE. India play two practice games before starting their campaign against Pakistan on October 24.
