IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians Captaincy Affecting Rohit Sharma’s Batting: Saba Karim

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is heading into the second half of the IPL with runs and form. In the recent Test series against England, he ended up as the highest run-getter for India scoring 368 runs. He also scored 250 runs from seven games in the first half of the IPL. Rohit’s men look good to defend their title in the 2021 season. Currently, Mumbai are placed fourth in the points table with four wins from their first seven games.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Saba Karim has expressed his concern over Rohit’s inconsistency in the IPL since the last few years. Saba feels that Rohit is not being able to convert his international form in the IPL.

“There’s a need for improvement in his batting. He’s the captain and the Mumbai Indians are winning trophies under him, that’s a different thing. They have a lot of match-winners so his performances don’t get much attention. His most important role in the team is as a batsman… This is a peculiar case. Every time he goes to the IPL he’s in brilliant form in international cricket but fails to convert it during the tournament,” Saba Karim said in an interview on YouTube channel Khelneeti.

Saba Karim who is also working as a talent scout with Delhi Capitals feels that the captaincy of Mumbai Indians is affecting Rohit Sharma’s batting. The side has won five IPL titles under Rohit but Saba feels that Rohit’s batting has compromised in the process.

“I sometimes feel that a player gets consumed too much into captaincy and it’s possible his focus wavers from batting,…If you are a batsman-captain, your first role is to make runs with the bat. Captaincy gets better with the confidence from batting which has happened in Rohit Sharma’s case as well. However, when you have been captaining for a long time, the focus, preparation and temprament you need to have there gets disturbed. You tend to think more as a captain on batting and bowling strategies… It’s very important for a captain to have that clarity when he goes out to bat” Saba added.

Mumbai Indians face Chennai Super Kings on September 19 resuming the IPL in the UAE.
