Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli has decided to step down as the skipper of the franchise after the completion of IPL 2021. RCB begin their campaign against Kolkata knight Riders on Monday, September 20. Kohli was assigned as the captain of the franchise back in 2013. He took the team to the IPL final in 2016 scoring 973 runs in the season. The franchise is placed third in the points table ahead of their first game of the UAE leg.

In a video posted by RCB’s official Twitter handle, Virat Kohli made a statement on his future with RCB.

“This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. I’ll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me” said Kohli.

Virat Kohli has been constantly playing for RCB since 2008. He has scored over 5000 runs for the franchise and played in two IPL  finals (2011, 2016).

Ahead of the start of RCB’s campaign, Kohli has led the Banglore franchise in 132 IPL games.  He has won 60 games and lost 65 games. Four games ended in no-result while three games ended in a tie. Kohli’s win percentage over the years has been less than 50 percent.

“This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. I’ll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me,” Kohli said.

“I want to be able to be committed to the responsibilities that I am fulfiling and I felt I needed the space to be fresh, to regroup and be absolutely clear in how I want to move forward,” Kohli said.

“I spoke to the management this evening, it was something that was in my mind for a while,” Kohli further added.
