The bidding for the two new teams captured the headlines all over the country as we saw Lucknow and Ahmedabad enter the biggest cricket tournament in the world, the Indian Premier League (IPL). Player retentions were the one thing that everyone was confused about but BCCI has now given the retention rules.

IPL retention rules: Old teams can keep four players ahead of the 2022 auction. After the list of retained players is finalised, the two new franchises will get the first choice from the rest of the pool ahead of the auction where they can pick up a maximum of 3 players.

There are two different combinations teams can apply while picking their four players to retain: three Indians and one overseas, or two Indians and two overseas

The 5-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians will certainly be pleased with this. It allows them to retain a few of their core team members who helped them win these trophies.

4) Kieron Pollard

This man’s name has become synonymous with Mumbai Indians. It is hard to imagine him playing for any other franchise. He has a fantastic record in the IPL. He is the lower order big hitter that provides the finishing touches which Mumbai Indians has always cherished.

He has often single-handedly won matches for his side. His record against arch-rivals CSK is the best. When Rohit Sharma has not been in the time this man has stepped up and captained the team well.

3) Jasprit Bumrah

The Indian fast bowler was scouted by the Mumbai Indians team back in the day. Since then he has been an integral part of their team. His death bowling skills are unmatched to this day and his pinpoint yorkers are feared by every batsman.

This man will certainly be seen again in the blue jersey. Bumrah will be leading the bowling attack again next year and he will be a key player for them.

2) Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya has been out of form in recent times but as Virat Kohli has said “The quality he provides at number 6 cannot be matched. On his day this man can be extremely brutal.

He has not been bowling recently but when he gets back to bowling and big-hitting, Hardik Pandya is an asset every team will envy. Mumbai might show faith in the out of form all-rounder and retain him during this auction as well.

1) Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is the most successful IPL captain of all time. The 5-time IPL winning captain will be retained for sure before the upcoming option. This is a no-brainer and we will see him leading the men in blue again.

He will be looking to get all his trusted men back and will lead the charge for the 6th title. His captaincy has been praised by many pundits from around the world. He will not only be leading Mumbai but also the Indian T20I team.
