IPL 2022: “If MS Dhoni Is Only Going To Play For A Year, I’d Be Very Reluctant To Retain Him” – Brad Hogg

Former cricketer Brad Hogg believes Chennai Super Kings must not take emotional calls regarding MS Dhoni’s retention ahead of the IPL auctions. He highlighted that MS Dhoni may not play for more than a year in the tournament.

As per the retention rules laid by BCCI, each existing IPL team can retain up to four players. The Chennai Super Kings are speculated to have retained MS Dhoni for the next three IPL seasons. However, Brad Hogg feels that the franchise should put Dhoni back in the auctions, and then pick him. Speaking on his Youtube Channel, Brad said,

“MS Dhoni, how long does he want to play? If he is only going to play for one year, I’d be very reluctant to pick him in the retention cycle. I’ll put him back in the auction and hopefully pick him back. It’s very tough but this is the business world. Do you want to put 15% of your wage on one player who is only going to be there for 1 year?”

Brad Hogg picked Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, and Faf Du Plessis as the retention choices for the Chennai Super Kings.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore had a decent Indian Premier League 2021 season. They lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator match of the tournament. With Virat Kohli stepping down as the leader, the franchise will be looking for his replacement.

Discussing Royal Challengers Bangalore’s possible retentions, Brad Hogg picked Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, and Yuzvendra Chahal as the three options. He also named Glenn Maxwell, as the overseas pick, and added that Maxwell, might be the new captain. Hogg stated,

“They have had their problems. I think they will retain Kohli, Chahal, Padikkal, and Maxwell. If I was going to take a huge risk, I’d have Maxwell come in as my overseas player. I might make him captain because there might not be too many options in the auction moving forward.”

“That’s a huge risk because Maxwell’s inconsistency over the last decade will trouble RCB selectors. They will be a little unsure,” he added.

Hogg also revealed which franchise might go all out for David Warner. The southpaw has ended his association with the left-handed batsman. He played only two games in the UAE leg and was benched for the rest of the season. Warner also spoke about the SRH management not keeping him updated with his future at the franchise time and again.

“Ahmedabad, I think they are going to pick up David Warner as the captain,” he said. “They will have Ishan Kishan from Mumbai Indians and, I feel, they will have Harshal Patel from RCB on their list as well. They might even go with (Mohammed) Siraj. But Harshal will be the big one there.”

The deadline for existing IPL franchises to retain a maximum of four players is November 30.
