IPL 2023 match between RCB and MI: On Sunday, April 2, in Bengaluru, Tilak Varma helped Mumbai Indians come back from being 29 for 3 to post 171 runs by hitting 84 not out off just 46 balls. With a stunning 84 not out in a lone warrior’s effort in MI’s IPL 2023 opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Tilak Varma told the world he is nowhere close to a one-season wonder.

Tilak Varma guided the Mumbai Indians side in scoring with 84 runs off 46 deliveries and remained not out as he aided Mumbai Indians to come back from being 29 for 3 at the end of the powerplay to score 171 runs in 20 overs. More impressive was the way Tilak handled the regular wicket-falling around him while remaining composed and calm.

The second-highest mark on Sunday by an MI batter was 21, and it came from rookie Nehal Wahdera. Tilak didn’t withdraw into a shell because there were wickets at the other end. He countered instead, putting the onus back squarely on the RCB bowlers. After RCB was in trouble at 48 for 4, it was Tilak and Nehal who turned things around with a 50-run stand.

Tilak Varma lit up the M Chinnaswamy Stadium with his effortless hitting, both against pace and spin, as he smacked 4 sixes and 9 boundaries. He recalled the shot made famous by MS Dhoni by concluding the innings with a helicopter shot that flew over the crowd.

Chris Gayle was impressed by Tilak’s poise and power-hitting abilities in IPL 2023.

“It is the first time I’ve ever seen this young man bat. He batted exceptionally; hats off to him. He confronted RCB while his team was under duress. Bangalore was on top, but the young man deserves praise. I have no words to adequately describe how well he batted. the end of the powerplay to score 171 runs in 20 overs,” he said.
