In order to hit five consecutive sixes in the 2023 Indian Premier League, batter Rinku Singh of the Kolkata Knight Riders revealed his journey from hauling cylinders on a bike. To lead KKR to an unlikely three-wicket victory, Rinku played a memorable inning, hammering Gujarat Titans pacer Yash Dayal for five consecutive sixes.
In an exclusive interview with India Today Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai, Rinku said that because his father disliked cricket, it has been a challenging journey for him.
He also mentioned that he used to ride a bike with his brother to carry cylinders. In one of the IPL’s most illustrious victories, Rinku scored 48 not out of 21 balls while playing a destructive knock.
“Since my father disliked cricket, it has been a challenging journey for me. I was asked to assist my father at work. My brother and I once rode a bike while hauling cylinders. My mother also advised us to start working with our father because he isn’t financially supporting us,” said Rinku.
He continued by saying that after being instructed to sweep the floors of a coaching facility once, he solely focused on playing cricket.
With Rinku’s contribution, KKR won their second game of the year, handing the defending champions their first defeat since 2023.
When asked about his passion for the sport, Rinku said he has always enjoyed cricket and only began to take it seriously after an inter-school competition.
“Since I was a young child and played the game with my brothers, I have always enjoyed cricket. I started playing after an inter-school event,” said Rinku.
Umesh Yadav of KKR took a single to give Rinku the strike on the first ball of the final over with 29 runs needed. Then, Rinku made the decision to destroy Dayal’s bowling, taking the aerial route on all five occasions and slamming five consecutive sixes to lead his team to a thrilling victory.
KKR will turn their attention to SunRisers Hyderabad on April 14 after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans in back-to-back games.
