Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Mumbai Indians in a high-scoring thriller played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on 27th March 2024. It was a sensational batting effort by the SRH batters as Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram, Klassen’s knock helped them to post 277 for 3 in 20 overs.

In reply, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan gave a flying start before Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir showed intent to give them a chance. It was a tall ask as captain Hardik Pandya and Co as MI made 246 for 5 in 20 overs.

Here we look at the 5 records that were broken during the SRH and MI match:

  1.  Highest IPL total

Sunrisers Hyderabad posted the highest-ever total in IPL history. Travis Head looked in sublime touch right from the word go putting enough pressure on MI bowlers. After the fall of Mayank Agarwal’s wicket, Abhishek Sharma and Head kept the pressure on the MI bowlers.

Abhishek Sharma made fifty off 16 deliveries while Head completed fifty off 18 balls to keep the momentum going for SRH.  Heinrich Klassen decimated the MI bowling and put on 116 runs for the 4th wicket along with Markram.

Sunrisers Hyderabad broke Royal Challengers Bangalore’s record of 263 for 3 against Pune Warriors India in 2013.

  1. Most Sixes In An IPL Match

Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians broke the record for most sixes in an IPL match. SRH batters demonstrated excellent batting in the entire innings with Abhishek Sharma and Klassen hitting 7 sixes each, 3 sixes by Travis Head and Aiden Markram 1. They hit a total of 20 sixes that helped SRH post 277 for 3.

Mumbai Indians batters also showed class with six hitting abilities.  Rohit Sharma hit 3, Ishan Kishan 4, Naman Dhir 2, Tilak Varma 6, Hardik Pandya 1, Tim David 3, and impact player Romario Shepherd 1 which resulted in 18 sixes.

The SRH and MI match broke the record of the RCB vs CSK match which resulted in 33 sixes in 2018.

 

  1. Most Expensive Spell By A Debutant in IPL

The 17-year-old South African pace bowler Kwena Maphaka made his debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It was an unforgettable debut for the youngster as he was taken to the cleaners by the SRH batters. His bowling efforts did not yield much going for 66 runs in his 4 overs without picking any wickets.

Kwena was the leading wicket-taker in the 2024 Under 19 World Cup played in South Africa.  He went past Michael Neser’s record who gave 62 runs for Punjab Kings in 2013.

  1. Highest Aggerate

The Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians saw the greatest number of runs scored in the T20 format. After being asked to bat first by Pandya, SRH batters showed class posting 277 for 3 in 20 overs.

In reply, Mumbai Indians made 246 for 5. At one stage, things looked comfortable with Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir at the crease. Hardik Pandya struggled to lose the momentum for MI.

A total of 523 runs were scored in the entire match. The previous best was between South Africa versus West Indies during the 2nd T20I match at SuperSport Park, Centurion on 26th March 2023.

West Indies posted 258 for 5 in 20 overs while South Africa chased down the target with 7 balls to spare.

  1. Sunrisers Hyderabad Highest Ever Powerplay Total

Sunrisers Hyderabad showed their class right from the ball especially Travis Head putting enough pressure on MI bowlers. Mayank Agarwal was dismissed cheaply.

Head and Abhishek Sharma showed their intent not to allow the MI bowlers to settle. Both ensured that SRH scored their highest-ever total in the first six overs during IPL history. They raced away to 81 for 1, surpassing their record of 79 against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2017.
