IPL 2024: Injury Forces Suryakumar Yadav To Sit Out At Tournament Starts

The upcoming commencement of the 17th edition of the IPL has heightened anticipation, particularly with the Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions, under the leadership of all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Their aspirations for the new season are buoyed by the desire to deliver stellar performances.

However, Mumbai Indians have encountered a significant setback as star Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s participation in the initial matches of the season remains uncertain. Suryakumar, a linchpin in Mumbai Indians’ lineup, has been sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained during the T20I series against South Africa in December 2023, followed by a recent sports hernia operation.

A recent report indicated that he might miss the opening game against Gujarat Titans on March 24, adding to the team’s concerns. Additionally, his absence from practice matches on March 18 and 20 further fuels speculations about his recovery. Suryakumar’s expression of disappointment through a heartbreak emoji on his Instagram story adds weight to the apprehensions surrounding his availability.

Earlier in the year, he was sidelined from India’s roster for their three-game T20I series against Afghanistan at home. Despite efforts, he couldn’t regain fitness for the DY Patil T20 Cup in February.

After undergoing a prosperous sports hernia operation in Munich this January, Suryakumar Yadav is presently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, aiming for a complete recovery.

Reflecting on Mumbai Indians’ performance in the previous season, they displayed resilience but fell short of advancing beyond the knockout stages. Despite finishing fourth in the standings, their journey was halted by Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2. As the countdown to the 17th season intensifies, Mumbai Indians are poised to commence their campaign against the Titans.

The encounter is scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 24, where both teams will endeavour to commence the competition on a positive note, setting the stage for an exhilarating showdown.
