The Indian Premier League has introduced a Smart Replay System for the 2024 season to increase the accuracy and speed of decision-making for the umpires, according to a report by Espncricinfo. The tournament is set to kick off on March 22 with the Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai.
According to the report, the TV umpires will receive inputs directly from two Hawk-Eye operators under the Smart Replay System. The Hawk-Eye operators will be sitting in the same room as the umpire and provide with images captured by Hawk-Eye’s eight high-speed cameras across the ground. This system eliminates the TV broadcast director, who used to be a channel between the third umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators until now.
The TV umpires will refer to more visuals, including split-screen images under the Smart Replay System. A split screen helps the umpire to see synchronised footage of a catch. It will also provide a split screen for overthrowing boundaries, allowing the umpires to see whether the batter has crossed or not when the fielder released the ball. It will result in a quicker and more accurate decision, helping boost the game’s quality.

Tri-vision for stumping appeals under Smart Replay System
Under the Smart Replay System, the umpires will get Tri-vision for stumping appeals. The tri-vision includes footage from the side-on cameras along with the front-on camera in a single frame. Previously, the broadcaster would show the side-on angle from each side along with footage from Stump Cam. However, the Stump Cam records at a low speed, as opposed to the Hawk Eye cameras.
Meanwhile, the system will also effectively help to get more clear footage of a catch, which has been taken inches off the ground. Enhanced quality of the footage will be displayed from front-on and side-on angles. The umpires can also zoom in from a particular angle for better understanding.
