Star batsman Virat Kohli has surpassed Chris Gayle’s record for the highest number of sixes by a batsman while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL. Kohli achieved this milestone during his innings of 83*, which he scored off 59 balls, in the IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, March 29.

In his outstanding innings, Kohli struck four boundaries and an equal number of sixes, increasing his total number of sixes while playing for RCB in the IPL to 241. The legendary West Indian player Gayle has hit 238 sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament.

AB de Villiers, the South African cricket icon, occupies the third spot on the list with 238 sixes, followed by Glenn Maxwell with 68 and current RCB captain Faf du Plessis with 50.

In terms of the overall IPL history, Chris Gayle holds the record for the most sixes with 357, followed by Rohit Sharma with 261, AB de Villiers with 251, Virat Kohli with 241, and MS Dhoni with 239.

Kohli’s first six in the IPL 2024 match against KKR on Friday came in RCB’s third over when he flicked an off-cutter from Mitchell Starc over deep square leg. His second six was hit in the eighth over of the innings, where he slog-swept Sunil Narine over deep midwicket.

The 35-year-old struck his third maximum by swinging Varun Chakaravarthy over the deep midwicket boundary in the 12th over. His fourth and final six of the innings came in the last over when he whipped Mitchell Starc over deep midwicket.

While Kohli remained unbeaten on 83, Royal Challengers Bangalore finished on 182-6. However, RCB’s total proved insufficient as KKR chased down the target in 16.5 overs with seven wickets in hand.

Narine (47 off 22) forged an 86-run partnership for the first wicket with Phil Salt (30 off 20) in 6.3 overs. Venkatesh Iyer contributed 50 off 30, while captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 39 off 24, which included the winning hit – a six off Mayank Dagar.

Virat Kohli currently leads the run-scoring chart with the Orange Cap

RCB’s in-form batsman Kohli currently holds the Orange Cap. Across three innings, he has amassed 181 runs at an average of 90.50 and a strike rate of 141.41.

The right-handed batsman kicked off his IPL 2024 season with a score of 21 off 20 against Chennai Super Kings. He then followed it up with a knock of 77 off 49 in the four-wicket victory against Punjab Kings before notching another half-century against KKR on Friday.
